Improved Dog Mobility with CBD

Improving Pet Mobility with CBD

Joint soreness, arthritis and mobility is an issue in pets as they age. Just like us, pets can experience pain from numerous factors as joints and hip tissue degenerates over time. This can cause inflammation and discomfort. CBD has been proven to reduce inflammation and soreness allowing your pet to live their best life.

Many medications prescribed by veterinarians can have adverse effects such as liver damage, excess thirst, and lethargy. Fortunately, CBD has very few side effects making it a safe treatment for your pet.

Some common causes of mobility issues in pets are:

  • Hip Dysplasia – this condition is caused by the deterioration of tissue and bone in your pet’s hip. It can often lead to arthritis if left unchecked. Some vets will inject cortisone, but this is only a short-term measure to relieve pain. CBD is a preferable option as it will reduce the inflammation contributing to the issue.
  • Degenerative Joint Disease – this is an issue particularly in large, older dogs. It occurs when the cartilage in the joint degrades exposing bone. In extreme cases your pet’s cartilage may have degraded to the point where it is bone on bone causing pain when your pet walks or runs. CBD can help with the pain, but it cannot rectify the issue.
  • Herniated Disk – This degenerative issue is caused by Intervertebral Disk Disease. When pressure is put on joints the disk can bulge or herniate causing much pain and discomfort to your pet.

Improving pet mobility for your dog or cat

Creating a pain-relieving environment is key to helping your pet live a happier and healthier life.

A CBD regimen can assist in reducing inflammation and pain which will help improve pet mobility. Pets have an Endocannabinoid System just like we do. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is responsible for regulating many of the body’s essential functions like:

  • Sleep
  • Hormone Regulation
  • Serotonin Release
  • Calming Inflammatory Response
  • Reducing Pain signals sent by the brain
  • Controlling appetite

The cannabinoids in CBD are so similar to the endocannabinoids that our body makes that the receptor of the ECS will accept CBD cannabinoids when our body is failing to make enough of its own. This often happens as we age or if we are ill. The body does not make enough of these essential endocannabinoids leading to a breakdown of the essential regulation of many of the body’s functions.

Turmeric and curcumin supplements have also been identified to help reduce inflammation. A good quality supplement can be added directly to your pet’s food or water.

Be very cognizant of your pet’s comfort. Providing a good quality, comfortable memory foam pet bed in each room can be a good idea. This way your pet will not need to lie on a hard surface.

Maintain a good weight for your pet. If your pet is overweight, gradually decrease the amount of food and supplement with mashed steamed vegetables which are lower in calories but are still filling so that they do not feel hungry.

Maintain an exercise regimen. Even if it is just a slow walk around the block. Ensure that your pet is getting exercise each morning and evening. The reason for this is two-fold. Exercise will increase the flow of synovial fluid which helps to lubricate joints making movements easier. Exercise will help maintain your pet’s weight, alleviate stress on joints.

Pet mobility slings and harnesses can help if your pet is in the later stages of a degenerative disease. They can assist your dog to stand more easily, and they can take some of the pressure off their joints.

Installing stairs or a ramp to help your pet onto furniture and into the car can be helpful. If you have floors with a hard surface such as tile or wood, yoga mats can inexpensively be purchased to help your pet gain traction on slippery surfaces.

Pet CBD Dosage

We have created a handy Pet CBD Dosage Calculator to help determine the right amount of CBD for your pet.

The rule of thumb is 2mg-5mg per 10lbs of dog weight. If you dog is 10lbs, start out with a dosage of 2mg – twice a day (morning and night) for 5 days before increasing the dosage if necessary.

If your dog is 50lbs, start out with a dosage of 10mg twice a day for five full days before increasing the dosage if needed.

Many people buy two tinctures – a Broad Spectrum pet CBD tincture for daytime use as it is THC free and a Full Spectrum Pet CBD tincture for evening use as it contains 0.3% THC. Either type of CBD will work well and help improve pet mobility and their quality of life.

Dog Treats with CBD and Glucosamine can be beneficial for dogs with hip and joint issues. Glucosamine is a beneficial supplement for helping to lubricate joints and make movement easier. When combined with CBD and the anti-inflammation properties it can be a great product for assisting older dogs.

Many things can be done to improve the quality of life for your pet. As they age, making them more comfortable is key. Reducing inflammation and pain is also very important. Unlike humans, they cannot express the amount of pain they are feeling. If CBD does not appear to be reducing the amount of pain your pet is experiencing take your pet to the vet to find out the best option to make your pet more comfortable.
