CBD Tinctures have gained widespread popularity in the last 5 years due to several factors. With widespread legalization and more research completed into the health benefits, it has become a common staple for many seeking better health and wellness. Many of our customers ask us how to use their CBD tincture most effectively. We have compiled some data on CBD tincture uses below.
CBD Tincture uses a combination of CBD Isolate or Distillate with a carrier oil or product so that it mixes evenly and is easy to consume. It is also possible to get a very accurate dosage every time with a CBD tincture.
CBD Distillate is a hard wax like substance, while CBD Isolate is a white powdered substance. It would be extremely difficult to gauge a correct dosage by consuming just distillate or isolate. It is extremely concentrated, so even a small amount the size of a match head could contain upwards of several hundred milligrams.
CBD Tinctures are a great way to consume CBD as we have many receptors under our tongues. Sublingual medicines are taking by allowing the medicine, or in this case, CBD, to sit under the tongue for 10 – 15 seconds to be absorbed by these receptors. This allows the CBD to be quickly absorbed into the body without needing to pass through the digestive tract. It not only takes effect faster, but it also has a higher bioavailability (the amount that makes it into the bloodstream).
The carrier that the CBD is combined with is very important. It must be a shelf stable product. It must be natural and if possible – organic. Products containing oils that are not naturally shelf stable may spoil or taste strange after several months. We have found that Organic MCT (a high quality coconut oil) is most effective. Flavorings are also very important. Be sure to choose a tincture that contains natural flavors. Previously we’e covered the topic of the importance of flavorings.
How High Quality Tinctures are Made
Traditionally, tinctures were made with high proof alcohol. Tinctures have been around in various forms for thousands of years. The reason we do not use alcohol with CBD tinctures is twofold. Firstly, the taste is not great and if you were taking it every day you would risk receiving unnecessary unpleasant effects. Secondly, high proof alcohol could possibly damage the delicate cannabinoids.
Tinctures are a great way to consume CBD as they are discreet and fast-acting. It is possible to gauge an accurate dosage every time. They are easy to take and also have a mild taste. When a good, high-quality, base oil is used they can even last for up to 2 years. They are often best consumed on an empty stomach. We always recommend taking your CBD tincture in the morning on an empty stomach and at night around half an hour before bed.
A good organic tincture may also be used topically. Our Hempstrax CBD tincture with Melaleuca can be taken orally and may also be applied topically. The essential oil is steam distilled and organic. It can be applied directly to areas of pain for fast relief from pain and inflammation.
Topicals work to treat specific areas of pain but with long term injuries and inflammation they must be applied every 4-5 hours. CBD Tinctures work internally to help bring the body into balance.
How a CBD Tincture Uses the Body’s Endocannabinoid System
The Endocannabinoid System regulates many of the body’s functions. We have CB1 and CB2 receptors within the body. The cannabinoids found within the hemp plant (cannabis sativa species) feed these receptors with essential cannabinoids to help balance and regulate the Endocannabinoid System. CBD also helps to reduce inflammation. Inflammation and pain can result from the body sensing an issue and creating inflammation to reduce movement while the are heals. With the case of arthritis or an injury, the area often cannot heal but the body does not recognize this and the messengers send signals to continually create inflammation and signal pain. CBD can help to regulate the inflammation and pain receptors by calming these repetitive signals.
CBD has been show through clinical trials to be effective for treating:
- Nervous system issues
- Psoriasis and skin conditions
- Bacterial growth
- Cancer cell growth
- Muscle spasms and restless leg syndrome
- Chronic pain
CBD can be used frequently. In fact for people struggling with anxiety and depression we often suggest splitting up the dosage to 3 – 4 times per day. For people struggling with insomnia we recommend a full dosage at night before bedtime.
How to Gauge the Correct Dosage
With many people it is a matter of starting with a standard dose of around 50mg per day and splitting that dosage up into 2 separate dosages, one in the morning and one in the evening. We always advise people to take the CBD dosage for at least 3 full days before increasing the dosage. As with anything new introduced to the body we need to allow the body time to adjust. If after 3 or 4 days you feel you need more CBD to address your health issue adjust the dosage in small increments.
We have created a dosage chart to assist in identifying the correct starting dosage.
